Meals Partnership Coalition takes food safety very seriously. King County Non-profit meal providers serve millions of free meals each year. Most of those meals are served to vulnerable community members with compromised autoimmune systems due to malnutrition, or illness. Any form of food borne illness can be lethal to these vulnerable community members. To address this issue, MPC works with Northwest Harvest to hold an annual health card certification class for non-profit meal providers, and is a resource for community members if they have any questions regarding inspections or food safety.

Food Safety News:
Due to the cessation of the subsidy for environmental health inspections within non-profit meal providers the King County Board of Health voted to increase the environmental health inspection fees for non-profit meal providers in 2010. Meals Partnership Coalition is currently working with the King County Department of Health to develop a curriculum and self evaluation process for meal programs who cannot afford to continue receiving environmental inspections.
Agencies who in the past have not been inspected will begin the process of self inspection, and agencies who were inspected but can no longer afford to pay for County inspections will begin to self-inspect. Our hope is that this new program will reduce the possibility of food borne illnesses in our non-profit community, and will help redirect funds back into the purchase of nutrient rich foods for use in the affected agencies meals.
